It will be over by Christmas’ - Festive greetings from Surveyors in 1917

Writer's picture: John KnightJohn Knight

During World War 1, many regiments and corps of the British Army produced Christmas cards, for those serving at the front to send home to the families they were missing. One of the cards produced at this time was by a Topographical Section of the Royal Engineers whose primary duty was to produce maps giving the latest information as early as possible each morning - the card was dated 25.12.17 (1917).

The Royal Engineers have a history that dates back to 1716, and from which Ordnance Survey was formed. Many RICS members, past and present have strong and proud links with the Royal Engineers British Army.

Have a safe and Happy Christmas and positive 2022
