Lt Col Alan McGrath MBE RE 

Alan joined the Army in September 1984 and was trained as a Field Surveyor at the Army Apprentices College, Chepstow. He commissioned in April 2007 following a successful career as a Field Surveyor within the Geographic environment. Operational tours in the earlier years included Op GRANBY and Op GRAPPLE as well as spending a large amount of his career in the Middle East and Africa. He was awarded the MBE in 2002 for services to Defence. His first assignment on commission was the Assistant Instructor of Geodesy and Navigation within the Royal School of Military Survey (RSMS), delivering training to Officers on the Geospatial Intelligence (Geo Int) Course and soldiers up to foundation degree level. During this assignment Alan was deployed as the SO2 Chief Geo Offr in RC(SW) in 2008. He subsequently attended and successfully completed the Geo Int MSc at the RSMS and was assigned to HQRE, HQ 1(UK) Armd Div where he was heavily involved in the CAST/CATT for Op HERRICK at Warminster. He completed the QM course during an assignment at the Geo Reserve Sqn prior to taking up the position of OC at 36 Trg Sqn, 1 RSMS Regt. The last two assignments have seen Alan as the Second in Command at 101 Engr Regt (EOD) and SO2 Land Requirements at JFC Jt User prior to taking up his current position as Chief Instructor at the Defence School of Geospatial Intelligence.

Having enjoyed most sports throughout his years he remains an enthusiastic road cycler and runner and is still a very keen alpine skier with both family and work when possible. He is married to Shirley (for some 30 years!), they have four children James (30), Connor (24), Jessica (23) and Niamh (17).
