Sapper David Barrett from
the Royal School of Military Survey, based at Hermitage, has been
shortlisted in the category Best Recruit for his outstanding
achievement on the Royal Engineers’ Geographic Technician
course.
David is among the
shortlisted individuals and teams who attended a star-studded evening
awards ceremony on 16 December 2008 at Hampton Court Palace. The
winners were announced in front of an audience that included Their
Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall,
senior politicians, ministers and Defence chiefs.
Air Chief Marshall Sir Jock
Stirrup, Chief of the Defence Staff said:
“The members of our Armed
Forces consistently display courage and professionalism that are second
to none. These awards are an exciting opportunity to recognise that,
and to celebrate everything that our people and their families do for
the nation.”
Mr John Knight,
Principal of the Royal School of Military Survey, said:
“We are all very proud of
Sapper Barrett for making it to the shortlist in the Sun Military
Awards. He thoroughly deserves this recognition for his
outstanding performance in training and his commitment to military
ethos. Sapper Barrett is without doubt the best Royal Engineer
Geographic recruit the School has seen.”
On hearing that he was
shortlisted, Sapper Barratt commented:
“I greatly
appreciate my nomination for a Sun Millie award. I found that
prior to joining the Army and completing my Military Engineer
Geographic course, work was quite dull and failed to provide me with
much of a mental challenge. I felt I was wasting my time and not
achieving anything of note. The course challenged me every day and
has opened up opportunities that I thought were gone.
I have been
fortunate in all the studying I have completed to have been taught by
excellent instructors at the Royal School of Military Survey who were
able to challenge me and pass on their knowledge and
experience.”
The awards ceremony,
including unique footage of shortlisted individuals and teams on
operations, plus reconstructions of the acts of heroism that have been
nominated, were televised on Sky One at 20:00 on 18 December
2008.
