ESRI (UK)

ESRI has extensive links with the Ministry of Defence, particularly with various parts of the
Defence surveying community dealing with geospatial matters. In recognition of this ESRI Inc
and ESRI (UK) have kindly agreed to sponsor the Defence Surveyors’ Association, providing
information and articles for inclusion on the Association’s website and in Ranger Magazine. The
Association very much welcomes ESRI’s involvement in its affairs, as the Company has provided
substantial support to the UK Armed Forces for many years.

On Saturday 29th July 55 members and their guests attended one of our best-supported annual general meetings. The attraction was undoubtedly the unique venue of the Suttleworth Collection, located as it is at the Old Warden Aerodrome in Bedfordshire.

A special event has been arranged for a maximum number of 20 DSA members to visit the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office in Taunton on the 29th March. The UKHO is a Government Trading Fund and is part of the Ministry of Defence and has been charting the world’s oceans for over 200 years.

In Spring 2007 the DSA organised a visit to Oxford for some of its members with interests in British historical military cartography. The visit was reported in the Winter 2007 issue of the DSA Ranger journal. At that time, Nick Millea, the Bodleian Library’s Map Librarian, agreed to host another such visit in 2008 if there was sufficient interest. In view of the DSA Seminar in June 2008 and other events in the early autumn, Nick has suggested the visit might now take place on Thursday 20 November, to be coincident with one of his TOSCA events (The Oxford Seminars in Cartography).

The DSA will be holding its AGM at Aldershot on Saturday 11th July 2009 in the Boyce Building of the Aldershot Military Museum. Further details will be published in due course.
